Frequently Asked Questions
BISALLOY® Steel plate, also sold under the brands BISALLOY® Performance Steel, BISALLOY® Wear, or BISALLOY® Structural, is the only abrasion-resistant / high strength steel manufactured in Australia. In 2011 Bisalloy Steel Group established a Cooperative Joint Venture, Bisalloy Jigang (now Bisalloy Shangang) to manage the local production, sales and marketing of Quench and Tempered Steel produced under Bisalloy Steels strict production requirements for the China market.
BISPLATE® is the licenced brand name of Bisalloy steel produced in China. Bisalloy Steels has adapted and developed our trusted formulations produced in Australia to suit the advanced capability of steel plants built in the last decade in Laiwu and Rizhao ensuring uniform performance characteristics across our product range, regardless of where it is produced.
Q&T stands for Quenched and Tempered, which is a heat-treatment process widely used in steel manufacturing especially for producing high-strength steels like BISPLATE®.
In more detail:
What is Quenching?
- The steel is heated to a high temperature (above its critical point) until its structure becomes austenitic.
- It is then rapidly cooled, in a roller quench using water sprays.
- This makes the steel very hard but also brittle.
What is Tempering?
- To reduce brittleness and improve toughness, the quenched steel is reheated to a lower temperature and then cooled again in a controlled manner.
- This balances hardness with ductility and toughness, making the steel strong but not overly brittle.
Why it Matters?
Compared to untreated steels, Q&T steels can handle heavy impacts, high stresses, and abrasive conditions while maintaining safety and durability.
BISPLATE® products, achieve high strength, toughness, and wear resistance, making them suitable for demanding applications such as mining equipment, structural components, and pressure vessels.
The BISPLATE® range is divided into Abrasion Resistant (AR) grades ranging from 320HB to 600HB and High Strength (HS) grades up to 960MPa yield strength. See our Products pages for more details – Products – Bisalloy CN.
Hardness is the material attribute of resistance to deformation. One of the oldest and most reliable methods of measuring this is the Brinell test, using a hard spherical indenter made of tungsten carbide into surface under a standard load. For heat treated QT steels a very thin “decarburised” layer must be removed by careful grinding or machining to measure the true hardness of QT steel.
A typical hardness of a mild steel plate (Q235) could lie between 130 – 150 HB. BISPLATE®400 is 400 HB – over 2.5 times harder than mild steel. BISPLATE®600 is 600 HB – over 4 times harder than mild steel.
High strength Quench and Tempered steel grades covered by ASTM A514 (Grades B, E, F, H, Q) have a yield strength of 690 MPa (100ksi) and Tensile Strength of 760 – 895 MPa.
High strength Quench and Tempered steel grades covered by ASTM A517 (Grades B, E, F, H, Q) for pressure vessels, have a yield strength from 620 MPa min and Tensile Strength of 760 – 895 MPa.
These grades overlap our BISPLATE®80 with a yield strength of 690 MPa and nominal 255 HB (approximately 1.8 x hardness of mild steel).
To define a clear yield strength, we also can refer to this value as 0.2% Proof Stress that is the line drawn 0.2% below the liner elastic section of a stress strain curve that intersects the stress strain curve after plastic deformation.
BISPLATE®is available in the following hardness grades – 320, 400, 450, 500, 550, 600. The number designates the nominal hardness value in Brinell.
BISPLATE® can be used to fabricate the most complex and demanding structures. All grades of BISPLATE® can be easily welded using conventional low hydrogen welding processes. Its low carbon content and balanced addition of alloying elements (Mn, Cr, Mo, B) ensure good weldability, along with high strength, impact toughness, and high hardness.
By following our published Welding advice developed by our technical experts the correct preheating and energy input into your weld, together with the correct selection of consumables and recommended practice, can be combined to achieve the desired material properties in the final welded article.
