Frequently Asked Questions
BISALLOY® Steel plate, also sold under the brands BISALLOY® Performance Steel, BISALLOY® Wear, or BISALLOY® Structural, is the only abrasion-resistant / high strength steel manufactured in Australia. In 1994 Bisalloy Steels established a Joint Venture, PT Bima Bisalloy to distribute and market BISPLATE® produced in Australia. Since 2017 all QT steel produced at our Australian factory has been branded under our BISALLOY® Performance Steels brand in our Structural, Wear, Armour and Protections ranges. Currently, we also produce our advance QT steel range in two factories in China under the brand BISPLATE®. Steel produced at all three locations are available for sale in Indonesia by customer request and preference.
The terms “Bisplate” and “Bisalloy plate” has become synonymous with “Quench and Tempered steel plate” used in Australia and Indonesia for decades. PT Bima Bisalloy has sold all our QT steels under the brand BISPLATE®.
Q&T stands for Quenched and Tempered, which is a heat-treatment process widely used in steel manufacturing especially for producing high-strength steels like BISPLATE®.
In more detail:
What is Quenching?
- The steel is heated to a high temperature (above its critical point) until its structure becomes austenitic.
- It is then rapidly cooled, in a roller quench using water sprays.
- This makes the steel very hard but also brittle.
What is Tempering?
- To reduce brittleness and improve toughness, the quenched steel is reheated to a lower temperature and then cooled again in a controlled manner.
- This balances hardness with ductility and toughness, making the steel strong but not overly brittle.
Why it Matters?
Compared to untreated steels, Q&T steels can handle heavy impacts, high stresses, and abrasive conditions while maintaining safety and durability.
BISPLATE® products, achieve high strength, toughness, and wear resistance, making them suitable for demanding applications such as mining equipment, structural components, and pressure vessels.
Hardness is the material attribute of resistance to deformation. One of the oldest and most reliable methods of measuring this is the Brinell test, using a hard spherical indenter made of tungsten carbide into surface under a standard load. For heat treated QT steels a very thin “decarburised” layer must be removed by careful grinding or machining to measure the true hardness of QT steel.
A typical hardness of a mild steel plate (Q235) could lie between 130 – 150 HB. BISPLATE®400 is 400 HB – over 2.5 times harder than mild steel. BISPLATE®600 is 600 HB – over 4 times harder than mild steel.
BISPLATE® and BISALLOY® steel can be used to fabricate the most complex and demanding structures. All grades of BISPLATE® and BISALLOY® steel can be easily welded using conventional low hydrogen welding processes. Its low carbon content and balanced addition of alloying elements (Mn, Cr, Mo, B) ensure good weldability, along with high strength, impact toughness, and high hardness.
By following our published Welding advice developed by our technical experts the correct preheating and energy input into your weld, together with the correct selection of consumables and recommended practice, can be combined to achieve the desired material properties in the final welded article.
Non-standard sizes are often requested by customers but require an extended lead time available from our production plants. Depending on your project requirements PT Bima Bisalloy typically supplies sizes that are close to standard.
Yes! PT Bima Bisalloy can offer parts according to your drawings and specifications and our Engineering team is happy to support your enquiries.
Yes, provided the standard limits in the product catalog guide are followed.
Yes, field installation is possible.
Yes, PT Bima Bisalloy can assist with drawings before fabrication, provided a purchase order (PO) is received and initial agreements are met.
Stock for fast-moving items is periodically available based on contract and non-contract stock plans.
Pending POs often occur due to delays in goods arrival or prolonged invoice payments (e.g., exceeding credit limits). If you encounter this issue, please provide the current status as it is.
We frequently receive inquiries about shipping updates. We provide updates based on the current status of the goods. If there are delays or other factors, we will communicate reasonable and rational explanations.
