Bisalloy Steels, Australia’s leading manufacturer of high-tensile, abrasion-resistant steel plate, has released a new, independently verified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for its quenched and tempered (Q&T) steel plate, marking a significant step forward in transparency and sustainability in the steel industry. The publication marks an important milestone in Bisalloy’s commitment to providing customers with transparent, reliable and science-based environmental data.
The EPD, verified by third-party experts EPD Australasia Ltd and completed in accordance with ISO 14025 and EN 15804, presents a comprehensive life-cycle assessment of Bisalloy’s most representative product: BISALLOY® Wear 450 Steel, 20 mm, which accounts for the company’s highest production volume. The declaration presents cradle-to-gate impacts from raw material extraction through to manufacturing at the company’s Unanderra facility.

Inside the EPD: Key Findings
Based on a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) conducted using industry-recognised modelling and Australian datasets, the EPD reports the environmental impacts associated with producing one tonne of Q&T steel plate.
- Carbon Footprint: 3,040 kg CO₂-eq per tonne of steel, covering raw materials, transport, and manufacturing.
- Recycled Content: 13.6% of the steel comes from pre- and post-consumer recycled materials.
- Resource Efficiency: Efficient energy use and careful allocation of by-products like steel scrap and shot dust.
- Water and Waste: Minimal water use and responsible management of hazardous and non-hazardous waste.
- Safety & Compliance: No substances of very high concern are present in the steel plate.
These results provide customers with objective, transparent insight into Bisalloy’s manufacturing footprint.
Manufacturing Excellence
Bisalloy’s manufacturing operation, based in Unanderra, NSW, involves a specialised heat treatment cycle including austenitising, quenching, and tempering. The process ensures high-performance steel with exceptional hardness and strength, used in extreme environments and applications across mining, defence, construction, security and agriculture.
Independent Verification
The EPD has been independently verified to ensure full compliance with international standards, providing confidence in the accuracy of reported impacts. The Declaration is valid until September 4, 2030, and may be updated as new data becomes available.
